Here is a suggested list for Cold-Weather Campouts. Remember, conditions vary and what might be appropriate for one set of conditions (e.g., 10° and snowing) can be wrong for another (e.g., 33° and freezing rain). The most important things are to stay dry, have a hat or hood on at all times, and have enough pairs of socks. The challenge here is to bring what you need without making your pack too heavy.

MINI-LESSONS

Staying and keeping dry is the most important thing you will do on this trip. We cannot take any chance that your sleeping bag will get wet. Stuff it into a plastic trash bag, squeeze out the air, twist and tie the neck. Now your bag is waterproof. then put it into a nylon stuff sack ( you can buy one at HTO for $10 or so); this will keep your trash bag from ripping.

When you go to bed, you must change into all clean/dry clothing. This is the only way to stay warm through the night. You may choose to wear these same clothes the next morning.

A sleeping bag liner (which you can make yourself by folding a sheet) can improve the efficiency of your bag by 10°. Notice we require 8 pairs of socks total: 2 pairs to wear Saturday, 2 pairs to wear Sunday, 2 pairs in case you get wet, 2 more pairs just to be safe.
