“Why?” I asked myself as I was hiking. Why am I hiking through the woods with this huge pack on my back just to spend a night in the middle of nowhere?” I kept thinking as I hiked.
Finally about a mile later we arrived at a campsite that was in the middle of absolutely nowhere. We pitched our tent and then went to a lake where we proceeded to play Frisbee, lose the Frisbee in the lake, find a snake under an abandoned boat, and then walk back to the campsite. (We got the Frisbee back later.)
Soon after we began gathering stick after stick of firewood in our arms and carrying them back to our campsite. I wondered why we needed so much firewood and asked and was told “No matter how much firewood we have it is never enough.” And I eventually learned the value of that saying at the Marsh’s farm campout (in January), but when I heard it then I thought “whatever” and continued collecting firewood.
By the time dinner was over I was exhausted and wondered why we couldn’t just go to sleep then but we couldn’t so I dragged myself to the campfire and sat on a log. The patrols performed some songs and skits and then I was called up to the front of the circle. As I walked I wondered what this was about. And then I saw the Troop neckerchief in John’s hand and realized what was going on. I realized that I was going to be officially inducted into the Troop. Then I understood why I was doing this.
