Committee Meeting for February, 2006

 

A regularly scheduled meeting of the BSA Troop 100 Committee was called to order at 7:32 p.m. on February 1, 2006 by Committee Chair Art Silverman at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. The minutes from the January 4, 2006 meeting were e-mailed in advance and approved. In attendance were Art Silverman, Don Francis, Gloria Robles, Annie Noel, Barry Wood, Francesca Rey, John Le Mon, Ed Barber, Lisa Hoke, John Cates, Richard Tilly, and Amy Wooden. Lisa Hoke will chair the meeting on March 1, as Art Silverman will not be available.  

 

 

John Le Mon gave the Scoutmaster’s report.

 

1)  Scouts need to decide which stories they will write for the Council Fire, and they will also need to make drawings to go with their story (labeled clearly on the back).

 

2) Goshen is scheduled for July 1-8. John will not be available for the last half of the week, as he will be attending his son’s wedding in Massachusetts. The Troop will need to arrange transportation and leadership for the latter half of the week. Payments are due the February 25, and should be about $295.

 

3) High Adventure will be a canoe trip, possibly at the Adirondacks. (The story from the last trip is on the Troop’s website.) This trip is tentatively scheduled to leave July 14 or 15 and return in a week.

 

4) The Troop is still on the waiting list for Philmont in 2007 in position 1372 out of 1418. It does not seem likely we will be going in 2007. It’s possible to tag along on a Council trip, but they are substantially more expensive. It’s possible the Council might have some unused slots the Troop would be able to use and not have to pay the Council rates. John will try again for 2008.

 

5) Marsh’s Farm was not cold, but it was windy. They did get about an inch of snow. Only one tent was blown away during the campfire, due to the softness of the ground. The boys did have a good time, though the patrols didn’t have their own fires.

 

6) The Troop is planning to schedule a work weekend at Marsh’s Farm to meet service requirements. Two of the stream crossings are greatly in need of improvements. This is tentatively planned as an overnight trip in May or June.

 

7) All of the First Class Scouts or above who needed to attend a Cub Scout meeting in order to advance went to the Pack 61 Pinewood Derby and worked for four straight hours.

 

8) Recruitment continues to be an issue. Next year, Pack 100 will have a Webelos den crossing over to Scouting. Pack 61 encourages

their Webelos to look at different troops and has a Den ready to cross into Scouting. St. Ann’s Academy may also be a source of new Scouts.

 

9) There will be no Court of Honor tonight, as only one boy had earned a merit badge and there are no rank advancements.

 

10) This Sunday is Scout Sunday. Palisades Community Church is having a service for the Scouts at 11:00 a.m. and a fellowship time after. All the Scouts need to do is show up. All Troop families are invited.

 

 

Don Francis gave the Treasurer’s report. The balance is at approximately $14,600. This is most of the revenue for the year, except for one set of dues outstanding and Council Fire revenue. Council Fire expenses were discussed. It was suggested that the front cover could be printed at home and save a great deal of expense for the overall printing costs.

 

 

The Anniversary dinner will be March 18.

 

Francesca discussed the problem of getting Scouts to work on merit badges, and the idea of a “badge” day was brought up. John will provide forms to encourage parents to sign up as Merit Badge Counselors. John will also bring the idea of putting one or more “badge” days on the calendar for next year up at the PLC trip at the end of the month.

 

Richard Tilly, District Commissioner, announced that University of Scouting is February 25 at W. T. Woodson High School in Fairfax. All adults are encouraged to go, as the courses are excellent. Impeesa will be June 24-July 1 and July 22-29, which is a training course for Junior leaders. A District “badge” day will be coming on February 11.

 

The Troop will be planning on a service project at Marsh’s Farm to help several boys with their “Fifty Miler” award.
